Garden Blooming Blog Day February 2011

A basket of bulbs did not get formally planted.

The freeia bulbs from EasytoGrowBulbs.com appear carefree. They are ignorant that I ran out of steam before I ran out of bulbs. They are freely blooming in a bag of soil opened inside a spare crate. Amazingly- they are blooming way ahead of the bulbs in the ground, ensuring a long season.

This tangerine tree would have expired of "old age" a decade ago if it weren't for the compost bin set just to its side. The roots must suck the nourishment right up to the fruit. If I get organized in time for my next writers group, I'm thinking to bring a big bag full of its fruit, a juicer and a bit of Proseco to try over ice):-

The service side yard the tangerine serves as gateway to has filled in with a colorful wildness that is abuzz with activity. There is no missing the bees darting for a taste of the African Blue Basil.

The 'Pink Home Run' rose by Weeks Roses is as healthy as an athlete and as pretty as a movie star. She and the blooming basil are wrestling for prominence in the narrow corridor.

Against the house two 'Sunshine Blue' blueberries hold the blossoms just out of reach of a stretching bunny rabbit's taste. I hope. Not that I blame them. They are so much sweeter than the supermarket variety. If the bunnies would leave the fruit on the bush for us, I would leave a pint of grocery berries in exchange.

There is much more in the garden. There is a wine to tell you about. Photos of the dessert which was marvelous. So please come back.

  1. I love the scent of freesias. We have some in a pot that have been coming back for about 10 years. I love that photo of the rose with the other flowers in the background!

  2. Welcome to my garden.

Freesias are proof a plant doesn't have to be fancy to be wonderful.

Not that I would give up any fancy cultivar that has landed here):-

Wish I could take credit for the Pink Home Run and basil combination. It was just good fortune of where an empty pot was when I needed to get the bareroot rose into soil.

Thank you my dear Ludia for yur sweet words about dear Betty....It means a lot to me. Many people here are hurting a lot....me included. That is Life I'm afraid.

  4. I always have trouble with weed control. I hardly ever get my plants looking like that.

  5. A lot going on in sunny CA compared to snow covered PA. I wish I could join you for that tangerine cocktail---sounds delicious. Happy GBBD, Carolyn

  6. Lydia,

Your photos always amaze me. Your garden looks like such a serene and peacreful place. No wonder you love working out there. Gorgeous flowers! Every time I see them I wish we had flowers instead of so many bushes. Then I start wondering where we would put them. Lots of work too.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Hugs, Trisha

  7. Good morning, all. It warms a writer's heart to wake up to such nice comments.

Hugs to you OOLH. Your friend is preparing a place in the hereafter.

Trisha- The structure of bushes is what is missing in my own garden.

There are marvelous flowers needing little attention you could tuck in to highlight a view.

  8. I too love your photos, as you have seen the weather we are having. Not a danged bloom in sight! Thanks for sharing your beauty and sunshine. Also, I agree with Carolyn, that tangerine/proseco drink sounds so refreshing and good. xo

  9. The juxtaposition of your roses with the blooming basil is striking and not a combination I'd thought of before...I may have to pinch this idea so I can enjoy this combination here in Texas!

Your comment made me laugh as the coldest I've ever been was in California. We traveled to San Diego for Spring Break way back when and went sailing...my husband and I still talk about how cold we were! We had no idea...we had images of sunny, warm beaches in our heads!
